Finding a Glimmer

There’s been a lot of talk about “glimmers” recently… you know, those little moments throughout the day that make you feel joy, happiness, peace or gratitude.

When I first learned about glimmers, I was in the pits of postpartum depression (learn more about that here) and so I was in literal survival mode every day. Every suggestion and piece of advice I was given just seemed completely insurmountable no matter how logical it seemed.

But a glimmer…

It felt somehow more doable… because it wasn’t doing something or adding anything to my already difficult days. It was simply NOTICING something that was already there.

One morning after going to my exercise class, I took a mug of coffee into the shower with me purely for convenience.  And then as I stood there sipping my coffee in the shower, I suddenly felt little rush of joy.  Here I was in a warm shower holding my favorite mug made by my friend Amber, drinking a delicious coffee.  And this felt like a perfect glimmer to me.

From then on, I have continued bringing something to drink with me into the shower.  I’m not sure what it is about it, but sipping something delicious in a warm shower makes me feel joy.  Sometimes it’s coffee if I shower in the morning and sometimes it’s my magnesium drink if I’m showering at night.  And other times, my husband makes me a cocktail to bring with me.  No matter the time or day or the drink of choice, I feel at peace for a few moments before heading back to the chaos of daily life.

What glimmers have you found recently?
